Your first website: where to start

Turn a big idea into a small page that works.

Start with a purpose

Your first project does not need to be an all-purpose platform. Pick a page about a favourite book, game or hobby. What should visitors find there? A heading, short introduction and useful link may be enough. A clear purpose helps you choose what to build.

Connect three pieces

HTML structures headings, text, images and links. CSS controls colour, size and layout. JavaScript responds to actions such as a button click. Build a readable HTML page first, style it with CSS, then add the interaction it needs.

A small final check

Open the page on a phone and computer. Is the text readable? Do links work? Can you reach controls with the Tab key? Ask a friend to explain the page’s purpose. Fix anything unclear, then try one new skill in your next version.
